I trust you and your families are all in good health.
The first South African COVID 19 case was reported in the beginning of March and on the 23rd March 2020 all schools closed. We were in lockdown from the 26th March for 5 weeks during which only essential services were allowed to operate. We went to Level 4 lockdown on the 1st of May, allowing limited businesses to open with still very restricted movement, and currently remain at this level.
The Schools, including Nyezane Crèche, has therefore been closed since the 23rd March and it is at this stage unsure when we will be able to re-open. There are a lot of discussion on the matter and we hope to have more clarity soon.
Our Government has made a plea to all Organizations and Businesses to as far as possible continue paying employees’ salaries and thanks to your continued support we have been able to pay our Teachers their stipends.
Our concern was however the children who could not receive their daily meals at the crèche and the solution we found was to provide them with food hampers during this period as many of their parents are unable to work and not earning any income while others are orphaned and live with their Grandmother.
With the help of our Teachers we identified those children whose families are in desperate need of food and are using the funds we would have normally spent on the Feeding Scheme to purchase and distribute food hampers to homes.
Our rural communities are being hit the hardest with the lockdown, especially the children who often go to bed without a meal and we therefore cannot over emphasise the value of these food hampers to the recipients.
We thank our donors from the bottom of our hearts for the financial support we receive, at this point in time it literally saves our children from hunger.
